Brazilian
and U.S. researchers now say the Amazonian forests are vulnerable during severe
droughts to fires started by humans in managed lands that spread
unintentionally to forests. Under drought conditions, the uncontrolled fires
cause increased tree die-off and canopy loss. The result is a warmer understory
with altered carbon dynamics that allows the invasion of flammable grasses,
